Sierra Hot Springs

(AKA Campbell Hot Springs?)

There seems to be some confusion between this and Campbell Hot Springs. They are listed as 2 separate places in the book “Great Hot Springs of the West” ’93, yet the descriptions and locations sound very familiar though PO box’s different. Anyone know the truth here?

how to get there: From I-80 take exit 188B in Truckee, go North on Hwy 89 approximately 30 minutes to Sierraville. The Globe Hotel is at the intersection of Hwys 89 and 49. To reach the Main Lodge and the Springs, turn right onto Hwy 49, then turn right on Lemon Canyon Road. Turn the next road right again onto Campbell Hot Springs Road. Follow this road to the Main Lodge.

Tent campers or RV’s (no hookups). “Out of respect for other guests we ask that campers arrive in time to setup before dark.” No cooking stoves or any open flames allowed in camping areas, but campers can use newly remodelled Lodge guest kitchen.”

Details: Cold mineral springs are piped from the source and heated, for soaking tubs. Bathhouse has 15 individual bathing rooms with old-fashioned tubs and music. Large wood-heated sauna. The bathhouse is surrounded by wide wooden decks overlooking Parks Creek, nice for sunbathing and relaxing.

Directions: On CA 70 about 5 miles west of the CA 89 junction. Look for two big logs in front of an old cabin with a chimney. This is west of a small RV park that is west of a bigger RV park called Crystal Springs.

Update Jan 2013: hot springs are open to those staying in R&R RV Park or in one of the 3 cabins. Call the Owner Rocki at 925-783-2913 to make reservations or visit http://www.randrrvparkhotsprings.com/

For day-use (2-hr soak), the entry is $5/person, which is paid at the drop-box. By keeping the springs clean and supporting the owner’s efforts to maintain a nice facility, then these wonderful soda and sulfer springs can remain open.

Esalen’s springs, are no longer open to the public, and are now only available to registered guests and staff. Mudslides from storms destroyed the integrity and safety of the old baths. “THE BATHS ARE OPEN and they are magnificent! After four and a half years, several million dollars and a series of challenges that were almost insurmountable, the restoration of the Esalen baths on their original site at the source of the hot springs is complete.”
